New Judicial Yuan president vows reform

October 14, 2010
New Judicial Yuan President Rai Hau-min promised upon assuming office Oct. 13 that he would launch a new wave of reform aimed at creating a clean, honest and capable judiciary.

Rai said his priority tasks include expanding public participation in the judicial process and boosting the judiciary’s responsibility to the people in order to win back public trust.

The goals of the reform drive include establishing a judicial system that is free from corruption, as well as transparent, considerate of the people’s rights, and efficient, Rai pointed out.

“I’m not pessimistic about judicial reform. In fact, I’m rather optimistic about its success,” he stated.

Rai said he wants to create a judicial system more open to input from the people.

In addition, he said legislation of the new Judges Act would be completed in the shortest period of time possible in response to calls to enhance the judiciary’s professionalism, guarantee independent trials and bring about a judiciary for the people. (SB)
